Tympanoplasty (Eardrum Surgery)

“Tympanoplasty” surgery, which is applied in eardrum perforations and chronic middle ear diseases, is technically the process of repairing the eardrum and the hearing system in the middle ear, as well as cleaning the inflammation in the middle ear and mastoid bone behind the ear.

Eardrum tears can be repaired with tympanoplasty to prevent recurrent ear discharges, prevent hearing loss, protect against infections and prevent other complications due to inflammation. In patients with significant hearing loss, problems in the ossicles that transmit sound can also be corrected in the same surgery. Cartilage, bone grafts or middle ear prostheses can be used to correct problems in the ossicles.

Suitable Candidates for Tympanoplasty

Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to repair holes or damage to the membrane of the middle ear. Suitable candidates for tympanoplasty are usually individuals who are experiencing hearing loss due to perforations, holes or damage to the eardrum. Potential candidates may also include those with membrane damage due to chronic otitis media, traumatic injuries or post-surgical complications. Individuals who are in good general health, fit for surgery and willing to follow the instructions for post-operative care are also good candidates for tympanoplasty. However, every situation is different, so it is important to consult an otolaryngologist to assess suitability and determine the best treatment option.

Tympanoplasty Recovery Process

Tympanoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to repair holes in the membrane of the middle ear. Post-operative recovery varies from individual to individual, but symptoms such as mild pain, hearing loss, dizziness and swelling are usually present in the first few days. Stitches are usually made with self-absorbing materials and do not need to be removed. Patients can return to normal activities within a few days, but full recovery can take several weeks to several months. To support the healing process, it is important to follow the doctor’s instructions, avoid certain activities and attend regular follow-up appointments. The recovery process usually shows a marked improvement in hearing, but individual experiences may vary as each person’s situation is different.
