Otosclerosis (Ear Calcification)
What is Otosclerosis?
Otosclerosis is a disease caused by abnormal bone formation in the middle ear and inner ear. When this new bone formation interferes with the transmission of sound to the inner ear, the main hearing organ, the patient develops hearing loss. The exact cause of otosclerosis is unknown. However, some patients have a familial (hereditary) inheritance.
Otosclerosis can be treated with surgery. This surgery is also called stapedectomy. The stirrup (stapes) ossicle, whose movement is restricted due to otosclerosis, is removed and replaced with a prosthesis. This operation on the stirrup bone, which is about 3 mm in length, requires special skill and is performed using advanced surgical equipment.
How is Otosclerosis Treated?
In the treatment of otosclerosis, “Stapedectomy” surgery removes the stirrup (stapes) bone, which is restricted in movement, and replaces it with a prosthesis that will transmit sound waves to the inner ear. Timely intervention is important to prevent complete hearing loss. Thanks to the stapedectomy operation, patients recover in a short time. They recover completely and continue their daily life. All symptoms that the patient complains about are eliminated. After the operation, dizziness may occur for the first few days. But the patient can return to his/her daily life immediately.

Otosclerosis Treatment Recovery Process
Treatment for otosclerosis usually involves surgical procedures called stapedectomy or stapedotomy. These procedures aim to correct abnormalities on the stapes ossicle in the middle ear and aim to improve hearing loss. The post-operative recovery process varies from individual to individual. There may be mild swelling and bruising in the first few days, but these symptoms usually subside soon. The full recovery process varies depending on the complexity of the surgical intervention and the individual healing speed. Following the doctor’s instructions, regular follow-up visits and avoiding certain activities are important to support a successful recovery. Given the individual differences in the healing process, regular consultation with their doctor and adherence to recommendations can help to ensure the best results.
