When this new bone formation interferes with the transmission of sound to the inner ear, the main hearing organ, the patient develops hearing loss. The exact cause of otosclerosis is unknown. However, some patients have a familial (hereditary) inheritance.<\/p><p>Otosclerosis can be treated with surgery. This surgery is also called stapedectomy. The stirrup (stapes) ossicle, whose movement is restricted due to otosclerosis, is removed and replaced with a prosthesis.
